Colocation
services include:
- Everything
most people want:
- Rack Space (we no longer charge per unit of
rackspace, but check about availability before buying equipment anyway).
- 2 GigE ethernet ports (into diverse switches).
- 1 240V power port on APC masterswitch (possibly
two where available for equipment with multiple PSUs), customer control
of masterswitches available via ssh to the terminal server.
- 1 Out of Band connection - either
ethernet to connect your remote management card, or (where
available) serial to
a terminal server port (9600/8/N/1) which you can ssh into.
- 1Mbps bandwidth 95%ile 5minute intervals for
each Internet facing server colocated (see seperate bandwidth pricing
if you wish to have a crossconnect into Jump for using the
bandwidth offsite).
- As many IPs as you can justify per RIPE rules
(see faq).
Bandwidth
services:
We run a fully native IPv4 and IPv6 network, with
multiple redundant upstreams and peers.
Billing is performed using ISP style 95th percentile usage based
billing.
Supported configurations include:
- Bring your own PI space / PA allocation, and
we'll announce it in BGP for you, given the correct authorisation.
- Request a subnet assignment from Jump's PA
allocation, which we can route to you (note these addresses are non
portable).
- BGP peer with us, and we'll transit any
prefixes you have the authority to announce.
Hardware:
Critical
considerations need to include power usage and remote managability, the
latest generations of servers are now including this in their design.
For power usage, a low idle current draw is critical - it doesn't
matter how efficient the CPU performance per watt is if the rest of the
system is drawing 1.0 amps at idle. Servers spend most of their time
idle, thus our billing is based upon energy metering a fully
booted yet idle (disconnected from the network) system. Ensure that
you've done everything to optimise idle current draw - with
speedstep/powernow, enabling various CPU sleep states, enabling reduced
fan speeds, etc.
For remote managability, the ability to completely re-install an
operating system from blank is desirable, eg in case of data
corruption, system compromise, etc. Servers such as the Sun Fire X2100
M2 include this by default now.
- Rack Mount Kit
Some of the major differences between 'poor' and 'good' rackmount kit
are provision for slide rails (rather than just 'rear support brackets'
which are often unsuitable for real world racking situations - see the
faq for why), and ventilation. Make sure you order slide rails with the
case.
In general, brand name equipment provides real rackmount solutions, and
proper ventilation of its components. Good sucesses so far have
included:
